Dr. Ries and Question to Consider for this Semester

As you look forward to your new observation and student teaching assignment what do you anticipate will be some of the difficulties that you may encounter along the way?  What are the  goals that you have set for yourself as you enter a new and more challenging segment of your teacher preparation program?  How, in your opinion, have you been prepared to take on this new role and new challenge in your career?

  1. As I begin my student teaching this week, some of the difficulties I think I’m going to face is teaching the 5th grade curriculum. All of my observation experience has been with grades 1 through 3, so 5th grade is a new ballgame for me. I don’t think it will be an easy transition.
Going into student teaching, some of the goals I have in mind are to be open to suggestion and change at all steps. I want to take every chance I can get to learn something new, both in relation to academics and my practicum, and I want to be able to grow and evolve in the classroom.
My experience of working with kids as a babysitter, camp counselor, private tutor, and now substitute teacher have all prepared me in different ways for student teaching. I’ve walked away with different and invaluable classroom management, behavior management, and interpersonal skills that I’m sure will help me in my student teaching and own classroom soon.

  2. As I prepare to start my observation hours next week, I am both excited and nervous. I met with my cooperating teacher this past Wednesday and we were able to briefly talk about the upcoming year and her way of teaching. For her 2nd graders, she runs her days by providing her students with a checklist of tasks they need to complete for the day, and they can complete the checklist in any order they choose. This is a different teaching style that I have never observed before and I believe that this new teaching style may be difficult for me to follow at first.
One goal I have set for myself is to be open to the new teaching styles my cooperating teacher may have. Another goal I have is to also try and embrace this teaching style myself as I continue to work and learn in the classroom.
The multitude of observation hours I have completed during my time at Caldwell is one way I feel I have been prepared for this new role. All the observing has exposed me to a variety of classroom management styles as well as provided me with a wealth of resources to use in my career. I also feel my experience as a classroom aide in 2nd has prepared me for my student teaching because I was exposed to the 2nd grade curriculum. My aide position also allowed me the wonderful opportunity to work with a child with Autism and ADHD and taught me strategies and exercises to help him stay focused in class.

  3. As I start my new observation, I am excited but also nervous. I have previously observed at this school but the environment in which I will be placed is fairly new. Something that I am so excited for is that I may know some of the students already! I last observed at this school in third grade when I was a sophomore and am now going to work with fifth grade. I feel very comfortable with this grade as I have worked with fifth grade for the past year. I think a difficulty that I may encounter is switching my form of teaching to match my specific school as the past school that I observed and taught in used a different method of teaching. However, while this may be a difficulty for me I am ready to accept the challenge and hopefully succeed!
One goal for this upcoming segment of teaching is to be adaptable when it comes to my environment. I have become so used to the teaching method from the past year but am ready to learn a new one and work to the best of my ability.
I feel as though I am very prepared for this new challenge that I will be facing. Throughout my years at Caldwell the observation hours have really helped me to step into the field and experience how things are within the classroom. I have worked with many students of different backgrounds and academic levels of success and feel as though I am ready to help any student in any way that I am possible to. I think that I also have many personal skills that help me to succeed within the classroom.

  4. As I begin my student teaching assignment, I am looking forward to working with the same cooperating teacher from last semester. She is a great mentor who is very passionate about teaching her 2nd graders. I anticipate a difficulty I may face is teaching a science based lesson to the class. I believe this is the case because I did not write as many science lesson plans in my previous semesters; however, I am always ready to take on new challenges.
A main goal for myself is to write more effective lesson plans that will overall improve my lessons. By doing so, will also help increase the students' understanding. Another goal is to make my lessons engaging for all students, as that will encourage them learn.
I believe that I am well-prepared in taking on this new role in my career through all of my experience I have so far working with young children. My observation hours throughout my semesters at Caldwell University allowed me to learn ways to become an effective instructor in a classroom setting. I had worked as a camp counselor and observed different approaches in teaching as well. These wonderful experiences have confirmed that I had chosen the right career path for myself.

  5. As I begin my student teaching, I believe I am most nervous about making a good impression. I will be working with one of my old teachers in a district I hope to work in once I graduate. A major goal I have set for myself is getting to know each child in my classroom so I can properly attend to their academic and emotional needs. I have been prepared to take on this role from a couple of different places. My job, as a teachers assistant in a nursery school and childcare gives me plenty of positive experiences that I can take with me to second grade, even if it is coming from a nursery school. Along with this, I have gained experience and knowledge from observing and teaching lessons in other classrooms. Overall, I am excited to be in second grade and to start teaching.

  6. Gianna Lange's comments for this blog prompt: Student Teaching

Last week was the first day of my student teaching assignment in first grade. It was also the first day for students. I have observed a first grade class once before but have spent a majority of my time in third grade. I am looking forward to being in first grade and seeing the differences that it has to offer. Since I haven’t been in the eyes of a teacher on the first day of school, I was very excited. I have not been at this school before, everyone was so warm and welcoming. It was interesting to see the ways that the classroom was run on the first day. My cooperating teacher is very organized and likes routine. The first day, was mostly about learning the routines and what is expected of the students. The nest time I went I saw that the students are already picking up the routine of the classroom. A difficulty that I might face in the beginning is learning the curriculum for first grade.
A goal that I have as I start a new and more challenging part of my teacher preparation program is to learn to different classroom management strategies to help my students. Im ready to learn these new strategies and open my mind to others.
My experience at Caldwell has prepared well to take on this new role and challenge by introducing me to the classroom environment early in my college career as well as getting used to writing lesson plans.

  7. While preparing for my student teaching, I am very nervous. I have never been placed in this school but I have heard great things about it. Recently, I met my cooperating teacher and helped her set up the classroom. The class consists of twenty first graders. My teacher seems very passionate for her job which really stood out to me when I met her. Her classroom is very organized and I was able to infer that her classroom is very structured. She likes to keep her students on a structured routine which I believe will make her days go a lot smoother along with her students learning how to be responsible for themselves along the way.
Going into this experience, I hope to come up with lessons that are going to be effective to all students that I will have. I hope to learn and see a lot from my cooperating teacher. I am obviously aware that that I will learn and have to use a plethora of strategies throughout my teaching career. But I am really eager to learn more strategies that teachers have found MOST effective. I really want to know what WORKS. Although I am nervous, I feel prepared going into this experience because it is not only exciting, but one step closer to reaching a life long goal of becoming an Elementary School teacher.

  8. As I approach my student teaching assignment, I am nervous for multiple reasons. I have recently found out that I will be moving to another school and grade level, due to my current cooperating teacher being pregnant. I am nervous about getting to know the students and taking over the classroom without having spent much time with the students. The challenges that I am facing is keeping my voice loud while teaching and speaking to the class. As well another difficulty I am facing is working on my classroom management skills, during this semester the first-grade class did not have any behavior system, which made it difficult to control the class while teaching. I am looking forward to working with a new set of students and learning more as the year goes on.
